Read the flyleaf on any book...
It says something to the effect .."No portion of this book may be reprinted by ANY means, except for short passages used for review purposes with permission of the author." In many cases electronic means are SPECIFICALLY stated as being unlawful.... so by the way, would be hand copying.

the difference between the new book being copied for personal benefit and a used bookstore is this.. with the former you are stealing the author's thoughts, words and work. With the latter you are buying or selling an object that is the private property (having been bought and paid for) of the owner of that specific book.
sorry, my original opinion stands
