Widow, I wonder, though, if Meade kept his job because of his qualifications, or if by this point he was pretty well inconsequential. Grant had such control of the AoP that in all senses it was his army and not Meade's. Don't get me wrong, I think Meade was a good general, especially compared to those who preceded him, but he was so deep in Grant's shadow that for him to see, sunshine had to be pumped in. Best Rob
