this thread is hopelessly hijacked so, here goes ..
The MOH was looked upon in an entirely different way during the "Late Unpleasantness" than it is today. You mentioned Sickles having to wait for the medal he wanted, getting it 30 odd years later.. He actively politicked for the award..that is NEVER done today. The capture of a flag automatically won the medal... Henry Miller captured the Garrison flag at Ft. Blakely, Al, on April 9, 1865. On June 8, 1865 he received the MOH..his citation: "Capture of Flag"
