Maybe belief in the cause acted as a motivating factor to choose a side at the start of the war, but I'm unhappy with it as a reason for a general to continue his efforts in the field. If someone's worked their way up to the top, they are not going to simply throw it all away because they no longer believe in the reason for the war. They, like all of us, are after the comforting ego massage of glory, victory, and success.
