 Coast to coast would have been fun in the golden age of trains (pre Amtrak)... but the govt has screwed up Amtrak to a "fare thee well"

surly staff, slow, never on time, dirty, filthy windows, stinky bathrooms, inedible food, shortages of good booze...
and I can't have a cigar while I watch the countryside roll by...

what would be wrong with a "smoking car" pray tell?

Now to me the epitome of a train trip would be the European countryside..
