David, I keep going back and forth on whether or not Sumner was the tipping point for McClellan's decision not to renew the attack. McClellan publicly showed faith in Sumner, but privately he wasn't fond of him. At the same time, McClellan did trust and rely on Franklin. I personally believe that McClellan would have called off the attack regardless, but that obviously cannot be proven. It's a fascinating topic.
