Actually the fellow I was thinking of was Captain A.S. Baxter, Grant's quartermaster. For some reason I seem to have trouble remembering his name, but he's the one who took the original dispatch to Wallace, ordering him to join the rest of the army. You're right that McPherson was also sent for that purpose, together with Rawlins, although it was later in the day. Perry
