 I think that Jefferson said it was like holding a wolf by the ears. Whatever. It's the thought that counts.

To make a short story longer (and to avoid having to go outside an work some more), I do believe that Jefferson did actually believe that "all men" included the black man. He just didn't have a clue as to how that might be accomplished. (It would take 200 more years for people to begin to accept that self-evident truth, and some of us can't exactly get our fingers around it yet.)

Whether he did, or not, is quite irrelevant. We, the people, weren't on the same wavelength.
