I have never read anything that suggests anything other than Gettysburg was a hasty fight by the two armies that clashed almost accidentally. Everything I know about that campaign tells me that Lee was going to Carlysle from which he could threaten harrisburg or even Washington. The idea was to influence the congressional elections as well as get the armies out of Virginia to relieve the farmers in the area. Meade was shadowing the AoNV and Buford and Heath happened to tangle at G'burg.
Did something change last night while I was sleeping?
