I am going strickly by memory here but I believe reconstruction did not end until the election of Rutherford B Hayes...1876? or thereabouts... As I recall, that election was thrown into the house and in return for democratic support of Hayes, reconstruction ended or was soon ended after his inaugraution. To suggest that Grant and Forrest had some sort of secret deal in '68 just does not wash with me. When did reconstruction end? If it ended in '68, then maybe there was a conspiracy. If it ended in '76, then maybe there was a deal.... In any event, it began in shame and ended the same way MHO! Ed Last edited on Mon Sep 29th, 2008 12:20 am by |
