I wince in anticipation of being lambasted for the following recommendation but here goes.... "Shrouds of Glory-From Atlanta to Nashville: the last Great Campaign of the Civil War" by Winston Groom Well written, with an easy to follow narrative, and reasonably balanced, this is a good starter volume for anyone interested in Hood's campaign in the west. I also own Sword's book and have always had misgivings about his obvious bias against Hood.
