This is not my area of expertise (I'm n ot sure I HAVE an area of expertise actually ;)), so I may be very wrong here, but I believe the terms came into use during the Civil War itself.  If you didn't mean to imply otherwise with the sentence on Bell Wiley, I apologize in advance.  :)

This is a very interesting question.  Anyone else have any ideas?
