Good question and good research Pvt . Johnny Reb of course come s from Rebel and Johnny is a common name so anyone you didn't know the name of was called Johnny . Bell Wiley uses Johnny Reb for his book on the Southern Soldier, He used Billy Yank for the Northern Must be because Billy was another common name.
I always loved the questions my kids came up with. They were first graders too not eighth graders but the questions were still good.

This is not my area of expertise (I'm n ot sure I HAVE an area of expertise actually
), so I may be very wrong here, but I believe the terms came into use during the Civil War itself. If you didn't mean to imply otherwise with the sentence on Bell Wiley, I apologize in advance.
