No quotes here. But if that audacious invasion had failed, general MacArthur would have been pilloried. Big time. He drew against an inside straight and got the middle card. This sort of decision-making is what makes or breaks a commander. No one in his right mind would have bet on the tide to get in there and unload divisions with the support required to get something done. Shovelling back some years, no one, in his right mind, would have invaded France on the say so of a meteoroligist who has little more than a guess at a window. Accidents of history?
