Bate and Walker were indeed strongly pro-slavery.  In fact, they were among those who were adamantly opposed to Cleburne's emancipation proposal and came close to accusing him of treason.  Bate's commentary is especially telling.  He wrote that independence and slavery were inexorably linked, and the former was basically not worth having without the latter.  Cleburne, as an immigrant, never quite understood this particular emotion.
