My daughter in law forwarded an email regarding the origin of taps in which a union officer Captain Robert Ellicombe is the composer. I've alwayw read that it was Butterfield. Any comments?
Snopes.com, for one, squashes the rumor that Ellicombe composed 'Taps':

Snopes, like most of the rest of us, prefer Butterfield as the composer. So,apparently, does West Point.
