I read Joiner's book not too long ago and I thought it very good. It's a relatively short read - less than 200 pages w/footnotes at the end of every chapter, maps and pics. I really don't have anything similar to compare it to though. It was Banks last command and a failure at that. He had just won the Thanks of Congress for something I can't even remember. What a loser.
