Unluckily that has always been the southern conservative position and one that Lee accepted: that blacks are not *now* ready for full civil rights but will be in the *future*. For all intents and purposes this issue has been the backbone of American social history for about 190 years: from the Missouri Compromise through the civil war, into reconstruction, the Jim Crow era and the civil rights era until today… HankC
