Where was it I recently saw or heard it said that either during or after the war there were free blacks who said they prefered the racism of the South to that of the North because they at least had it in their face in the South and could better deal with it whereas in the North there was no way of telling what you faced for the racism until it was sprung on you. That might be a partial explination why so many former slaves remained in the South. Another being that's all they had known so though they were now free the status quo didn't really change.
