Yes, "lost to history" was a bad choice of words. Lee, ill at the time if I recall, was badly let down by his subordinates and atrocious weather in the WV mountain campaign. On the other side, the Union victory was won for McClellan by his subodinates while he was in his usual place, miles from any action. Lee was sent South, McClellan was handed command of the AoP.
