 In my opinion, the Confederacy lost the western theater at Shiloh, and thus the war in the west.
Had the Federal army been destroyed there, Union chances in the west would have taken years to recover, Grant & Sherman would be historical footnotes and Southern moral would have been immensley boosted. Elements of Confederate western forces could be transferred east to fight bumbling Union generals of 1862/63.
