Grant's objective at Vicksburg was not the destruction of the Confederate Army. It was to take Vicksburg. The 20,000 men Pemberton had left were paroled instead of sent North. Grant's next move? He sent Sherman to lay siege to Jackson, MS. Grant was fond of siege warfare apparently.
