Your characters may not have owned slaves, however, that dos not mean they were not affected by the institution or racial perceptions of the time. Everyone was. If I am not mistaken Harpers Ferry is very near your setting. Surely your characters must have had strong opinions on the John Brown raid. Perhaps you might take a look at the local newspapers and see what they were reading. Acknowledging the racial reality of the times will give your characters depth and a realism that is lacking in so many Civil War movies. I think it could also help your movie communicate some of the more important values of humanity. Mark
