  From what I've read, James Waddell of the CSS SHENANDOAH was told by those on the US whalers in June of 1865 that General Lee had surrendered at Appomattox and that Mr. Lincoln had been assassinated. But he considered that some Confederates were still resisting and that he would continue fighting. Finally, in early August, a British captain convinced him that he alone had not surrendered and that there was no point in continuing. So at that point, Waddell disarmed his ship and made his way back to Liverpool, unseen by ships of the US Navy.
