I grew up with the smell of gun oil and woodsmoke being that scent of home. So I have a natural interest in the arms of the period... plus they are so much more artistic than the hunks of steel and plastic of modern armies. My wife also tells me my taste is all over the place... great minds think alike? You also mentioned Stephen Ambrose... look to his biography of Upton. I blame Ambrose for getting me hooked on the man. And his parallel biographies of Crazy Horse and Custer is increadible.
