Great Letter , guess that shows us how some Deserters were treated. I was under the impression that only one person on the firing line would have a live round and the rest blank so no one on the firing line would feel guilty of Killing a comrade guess maybe i am wrong or that was a Civilian practice or put in place later by the military.

I also like the last paragraph of the letter some folks could use it in regard to our troops nowdays.

Talk is cheap, but it takes caution and courage to go ahead in the face of such opposition as is met with in this Department. This army has been talked into one or two fearful and disastrous battles, and it is time the Commanding General be allowed to do his own planning, and that those who cannot right face a squad of four men, and who are at home amid featherbed luxuries, either hold their piece, or speak words of encouragement, instead of disparagement. Thus let it be in the future.
