Now and then I run across some remark from a diary or letter that sets me giggling.  The quote sticks with me, even though I can't remember the source.  The soldiers had a knack for the wry comment, the sardonic humor that kept them from crying.

It was raining hard.  Not just a Presbyterian rain, but a good Baptist rain.

. . . as thin as butter spread on a slice of boarding-house bread.

When the shooting started, the Home Guards skedaddled.  Reckon they were guarding their homes.

What have you run across that makes you smile?
