Actually, I think the film you are referring to was called 'The Horse Soldiers'.
It also starred William Holden .....
It did resort to a number of CW cliches, but was a fine movie none the less.
It was based on a true event. Grieson's Raid through Mississippi to disrupt Confederate communications and serve as a diversion for Grant's movements on Vicksburg.
