As for the original question...my favorite place to visit, without question is Gettysburg. The battlefield is great, but so is the town itself. Next, I'd give a slight edge to Antietam over Shiloh. I know the history better at Antietam and there are more landmarks there: Burnside Bridge, Bloody Lane, Dunker Church, etc. Shiloh is probably the best preserved battlefield I've been to. Although there was some fighting there, I wouldn't consider Appomattox Courthouse a battlefield, but I'd rate it the best non-battlefield CW site. It's quiet, pristine and without any modern intrusions. There's nothing quite like Vicksburg. I'll get back there one day, but it's a hard place to get to.
