Not a new book, published in 2001, "Intimate Strategies of the Civil War, Military Commanders and Their Wives," edited by Carol Bleser and Lwsley Gordon, is worth looking for.
A collection of 12 stories, six Union, six Confederate, each written by a different author, paints a much different picture of the Civil War than we are use to seeing. The stories examine in detail, the relationships, the influence and the impact these 12 women had on their famous husbands, and on the war. Varina Davis, Mary Lee,
Mary Anna Jackson, LaSalle Corbell Pickett, Lizinka Ewell, and Amelia Gayle Gorgas are highlighted for the Confederacy. Julia Grant, Ellen Sherman, Fannie Chamberlain, Elizabeth Custer, Jesse Fremont and Elizabeth Blair Lee round out the 12 chapters of this book for the Union.
If you are looking for a break from battlefields and tactics, or you are more into the people of the war, I highly recommend this book. I won't give any of the stories away here, but, you are sure to come away with some things that will have you shaking your head saying, "Wow, I never would have imagined that!"
