There is a very good book, 'Artilllery at Gettysburg', answering just about every question about Civil War artillery in the context of the battle in Pennsylvania. Generally, solid shot was used against infantry in woods, counter-battery fire and entrenchments. Spherical and case-shot are anti-personnel rounds that fragment upon detonation. Getting a round to explode within 100 yards of the target after a one mile flight is pretty good gunnery. Canister is the ultimate anti-personnel round. HanKC
