No question that, as a whole, the nation has "dumbed down." I think much of that can be attributed to increased class size now compared to then. I am a retired journalist and I definitely remember being told to write my stories as if I were relating the information to one with a 7th grade level of education. It was quite a challenge to write science and political stories with that kind of slant.
