Thanks so much for clearing up the word. I was trying to look it up in the two books I have and couldn't find it. I figure it was the wagon train people but wondered why they were called that.

Think I will go back to my reading on Kit Carson and the Indians. Which is the title of a really interesting book I am reading by Tom Dunlay which by the way has blurbs on the back from Publisher's Weekly , Western Historical Quarterly and Booklist .
