I don't think there was any question. Grant's last line is mere yards from the river...he was being advised to pull out, there were massed men huddled along the riverbank.. all fight gone from them and while the confederates did nothing to prepare for the next day, they were in better shape than the federals.
Have you ever been there? Every time I go, I am amazed once again at the location of the "last line" and how close to the river it is.
