I think that to get a picture of why people have looked up to and loved Gen Lee for all these years, one has to look at the whole man.

As a student the whole "no demerits" thing....

Meritorious service in Mexico.....

Being offered command of the AoP...

the agonizing decision to resign his commission rather than take up arms against family and home...

His undying faith in God...

Of course, his conduct and tactics during the war....

Then his conduct after the war as president of Washington college...renamed Washington and Lee University due to his efforts...

His refusal to write his memoirs or balme others for the loss of the war and thus the Confederacy...

By any measure, this was an extaordianry man who deserves his reputation....overated, no I think he might be underrated given his accomplishments before, during and after his defining service.
