You guys got to start Googling!  The URL's above give an interesting discussion on Black Slave holders, etc..

Another thing to consider is that the incident took place in the Soviet Socialist Republic of New Jersey.  There, as in most of the northeast, political correctness trumps common sense.

“We went to war on account of the thing we quarreled with the North about. I never heard of any other cause of quarrel than slavery….Men fight from sentiment. After the fight is over they invent some fanciful theory on which they imagined that they fought.”

John S. Mosby

Curry, A. (2002, September 30). Who won the Civil War? U.S. News & World Report, 58-63

"Our new Government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and moral condition. [Applause.] This, our new Government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."

Whoops.....I skipped over page three before posting above, not realizing that this issue was put to an amicable end.
