Am I the only person here who loves Hitchcock films? The 39 Steps, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Rebecca, Notorious, Rope, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho, The Birds, etc etc. Only a handful of duds among the 50+ movies he directed. My favourite is Shadow of a Doubt, but Vertigo is probably his most accomplished film.

Absolutely my favorite all time Director with only John Ford and Kubrick approaching his greatness. I just put Rear Window on my iPod yesterday. It was once my favorite but I think Vertigo has eclipsed it. I really like Shadow of Doubt and Stranger's on a Train too. I think The Birds has not held up that well and never liked North by Northwest as much as some but they're all good. Love looking for Hitch in all his films and it is amazing how many of his psychological hang ups make it into his films.

Kubricks my favorite director with Paths of Glory my favorite of his fims. If hadn't done this film he probably wouldn't have been named by Douglas as the replacement director for Spartacus. Doc C

From the title of the thread, I thought that someone might have written a book about Ethan Allen Hitchcock. But then I had to wonder if it was the general or the Secretary of the Interior. Never mind.

I do like Hitchcock. The Birds is probably my favorite. But I must say that Vertigo's ending made me very mad; I felt like I had just sat through a lot of suspense for something like that to happen. And I'm ashamed to say that I fell asleep watching Psycho.

Hello. I've been away from the board for a long time and am going through the various threads, seeing what everyone's been talking about. Hitchcock, eh? Yes, I love his films. I recently watched "The Lady Vanishes", and was pleased to see how well it holds up even today. What stands out the most for me are the later films, in particular, the ones that had their scores written by Bernard Herrmann -- "Vertigo", "Psycho", "North by Northwest", etc. When I was very young, and before I understood such things, I knew there was this certain sound that Hitch's films had. Later, I realized what I was recognizing at that tender age was a specific composer's style. Soundtracks are one of my favorite genres of music, and among my CDs are several with Herrmann's music. Of his Hitchcock scores, my favorite is the one he wrote for "Psycho".

Best Hitchcock movie?? Strangers On A Train The 'Metcalf' RR station is actually here in Danbury CT, and still standing. It's used as a railroad museum, and trains still come thru, though mostly freight trains.

It was his talent as a director that makes it work. The lighting, the soundtrack (creepy!), the short cut imagery. One of the techniques he used to make the viewer feel on edge was allowing the viewer to be a voiceless observer who couldn't do anything to help the next victim. YOU knew what was coming, YOU could see it and you wanted to jump up in your seat and yell..."GET OUT! GET OUT NOW!" ... but all you could do is sit helplessly watching between the fingers of your hands as they tried to cover your eyes. I feel that way every time I watch Rear Window and Jimmy Stewart is helpless in his wheel chair while Raymond Burr is about to enter his apartment. Okay, now I know what I'm watching Saturday night...where's the popcorn?
