If anyone out there has information on ancestors who served in one of the six regular cavalry regiments (1st through 6th US Cavalry) during the war, I'd love to hear from you. It's rather a broad topic, but I'm focusing on them one at a time and working my way through. Information is greatly appreciated and credit assigned.

Don, He was not a relative but I did a study on Captain Charles Russell Lowell, Jr. of the 6th Cavalry. You can find an article on this site. http://www.civilwarinteractive.com/ArticleGentleWarrior.htm

Thank you. I wrote a book about the regiment he later commanded, the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. Bear Flag and Bay State in the Civil War: The Californians of the Second Massachusetts Cavalry. You can also find an outstanding biography of Lowell by Carol Bundy titled The Nature of Sacrifice. http://www.carolbundy.com/ She is a wonderful writer and a great tour guide as well. She gave me a civil war tour of Boston a few years ago that was really cool. Civil war Boston, who knew? Tom

Don, Where are you from in California? I grew up in Sylmar in the San Fernando Valley. All of the family has since moved to Ventura. Tom

Don I was in Crescent City in August . Rainy stormy day. Visited the memorial to the victimns of the Brother Jonathan wich has a thin connection to Civil War. One of those that died was the Commander of the Department of the Pacific headed up to Oregon. That area is so beautiful. Susan

You know, I didn't know the Commander of the Department of the Pacific was on board the Brother Jonathan. Do you remember who it was? Undoubtedly someone from the Civil War. Great views from the memorial there.

Thank you very much for the link, Susan! Hmm, well the only cavalry link there is that he replaced the old commander of the department, and Sumner was also the regimental commander of the 1st US Dragoons.... Yes, it's kind of like the 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon game. Name a person or an event, and in my head I'm trying to connect back to the regular cavalry. I can usually make it in two moves. 8^)
