To add to the list: Sam and Dave Booker T and the MG's (made up a great portion of the Blues Brothers Band) Jerry Lee Lewis (check out his most recent cd with Keith Richards, Bono, etc)

Stones Beatles Eagles Crosby Stills and Nash Byrds Doors Janis with Big Brother and the Holding Company Janis with the Full Tilt Boogie Band Jefferson Airplane (not Starship} Hendrix Flying Buritto Brothers CCR Yardbirds with Clapton , Beck, Page. actually saw them when Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were both with them . Unknown to many, one of my favorite albums which I have finally found in cd form after too many years to count , is Jesse Ed Davis album. Jesse was on many L.A. albums and a member of Taj Mahal's band Rising Sons , a band of many greats that never really made it , CD is around . They did a rock cover of Candy Man Mississippi John Hurts song . Doc, Old time rock and roller here , my early 70's collection of records was used by a local college professor to teach a history of Rock and Roll . I wander off into Folk, Cajun , Old Tyme , and Cowboy music in times since then. My iPod is loaded with the strangest combination of music . Hurdy Gurdy to hard rock . Susan oops left out Dylan , Springsteen, Mellencamp, all the albums that are the sound track of my life. Opps Mamas and the Papas , California Dreamin always brings back memories of a rainy day January when a friend on the east coast told me that song made him want to leave New England snow and head to "sunny " California . So many Mamas and Papas songs in my sound track. which leads me to Lovin' Spoonful. Yikes the list goes on and on. Back to reading Civil War while listening to these and many more. 1. Beatles, Sergeant Pepper 2. Beatles, Rubber Soul ('In My Life' is arguably the best Beatles song ever — at least in my biased opinion. In the end, I could list all the Beatles albums, from beginning to end. I never grew up) 3. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young 4. Rolling Stones, Let it Bleed 5. Yes, Yessongs So who have I left out? CCR, Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen, Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, Elton John, — it just goes on and on. When I listen to radio, it's the golden oldies station. Since moving south, have learned to appreciate country and bluegrass, so here goes: 1. Patty Loveless 2. Martina McBride 3. Alison Krauss 4. Hank Williams (a virtual poet) 5. Willie Nelson Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, among others, all slide in and out of the rotation. The real hell is that as much as I love music, I don't play an instrument and I can't sing a lick. Whenever I sing, people run for cover and tell me to keep my day job — and I'm retired.

Doc I have Rising Tide . I started reading it about a year ago when I decided I needed to read some history that wasn't Civil War . I started laughing when I started reading this book and there were all the usual suspects from the War. I also have the Randy Newman CD with the songs about the Flood . Had some how missed it in the 70's but bought it after Katrina when it was listed on a music store website and mailer I get once a month. I do have to say I did not finish Rising Tide yet. I had to go back to Civil War for a discussion group . I will get back to it . hmm maybe I should make it my car book. (we have discussed that before ---- the book I carry in the car to read when I have appointment wait times ).

Oh boy Pvt. we could make a duo together . I love listening to music. My brother is an outstanding musican . He can and does play many different instruments. He also taught himself to sing . In various periods of our lives I followed his different bands and solo gigs helping him carry various instruments. People always tell me what a great musician he is and by the way what do I play? I learned to say early on. I play the radio and the record player. later I added the tape player and now just say I play a real hot cd player and iPod. Years ago coming home late from concets and other places a dear friend and I would sing along to the radio. One night she kindly told me I also hit the right notes. Another friend told me she could always tell the songs I had taught the kids she got from me . They sang them flat . One of the reasons I love to travel by myself is I can crank up the iPod in the car and sing along to my hearts content. Oh well.

Susan, Ha. We could be the Flat Tones. Sometimes my wife and I will sing to CSN &Y, where I sing an octave higher and she sings and octave lower, and the harmony sometimes actually works. Speaking of singing an octave higher, I forgot to add Frankie Vali and the Four Seasons to my list. And the Eagles. Last edited on Sat Dec 1st, 2007 06:05 pm by PvtClewell |

Pvt , I love it , the Flat Tones. good one. How could you forget the Eagles ? I have stood on the Corner in Winslow Arizona. and it is a fine sight to see. They have made it into a little park in honor of the song Take it Easy. There is a statue of a young man with a guitar and on the wall next to the statue is a mural of a store front window. In the window is a flat bed Ford with a girl driving . The music blares out from speakers set up on the other three corners. A small sign tells the story of a 70's band who wrote a song .. . . . Pretty cool. Oh and the lady in the drug store will come out with her polaroid and take your picture if you don't have your own camera . Now headed back to my Hotel California where I can check in but never leave. Susan

I was going to say Celine Dion, Village People and Kenny G, but then I figured I might be drummed off the board. Seriously, i agree with everyone here but I would add Johnny Cash (especially in his younger days...I just can't get into "Hurt" although I will admit it's powerful), Elvis, ZZ Top and John Fogerty by himself and with CCR. I have to say that in terms of pureness of voice, and obviously he's nowhere near rock or anything, is Nat King Cole. You want some good make-out music, play his love songs CD. Hot stuff! Best Rob

Being a child of the 70's and 80'S I have a very mixed bag On my ipod as well . My father Influenced me alot, early on 1) Eagles -- knew all the words to Hotel Cal. by 4 2) CCR 3) Rollin Stones 4) Chuck Berry (one of the least mentioned great guitarist) 5)Gordon Lightfoot (love acoustic stuff) Then the 80's hit and my father thought I had lost my mind 1) AC/DC 2) Def Leppard 3) Motley Crue 4)KISS 5) Cinderella Was big into hair bands/metal Susan.. can relate to the lack of insturmental talent, Have 2 guitars and my fingers never seem to match the music in my head. Guess that is why I love to play guitar hero on XBOX. Last edited on Wed Dec 5th, 2007 07:24 pm by younglobo |

Been listening a lot to the new XM Led Zepplin channel in my car and it just points out that those boys had few B side songs and almost all A side cuts. To add four more to the mix: Hendrix Vauhgan Beatles Doobie Brothers

In listing all these great bands. I keep thinking of the music they played. Individual pieces of music come into my head. That music then triggers events in my life. We watch movies . They have a sound track. I think those of us that love different kinds of music have our own life sound track. I would not rank Iron Butterfly up in the top five groups or albums. But just play the first five notes of Inagadadavita and I am back to the late 60's early 70's dancing my heart out . Earlier it was Louie Louie. Both songs I have no idea what most of the words are but I sure do know the songs I hear the opening notes of Otis Reddings Sitting on the Dock of the Bay and I am driving to San Francisco. I mentioned in an earlier post California Dreamin reminds me of a rainy winter day in Southern California walking in the rain right after I got a letter from my penpal in Rhode Island who was yerning to get out of the snow to "sunny" California . A Band called Hearts and Flowers had a song Rock and Roll Gypsy and the Buffalo Springfield had For What's It's Worth. Another band called Love had a song called Between Clark and Hilldale. {for those that don't know that was THE BLOCK of the Sunset strip in the 60's } I hear these songs I am there on the Sunset Strip hanging out with the craziest bunch of people I have ever known. Four years ago I actually stood on the Corner in Winslow Arizona and it was such a fine sight to see. They have a small park dedicated to the song . There is a statue of a young guitarist circa early 1970's. The wall of the building has a mural made to look like a store window and reflected in the window is a girl in a flat bed Ford and I am sure she is slowing down to take a look at that guitar player. There is a sign too that explains why this park is there . When I drove cross country before I got my iPod. I had a cd holder packed with cds. I played music that fit the area as I drove, Eagles driving in to Winslow Arizona of course, El Paso when I hit that town. Cajun music in Eunice La. Neville Brothers in to New Orleans, Driving across Texas with cowboy music, old tyme fiddle and banjo music in South Carolina I never leave home that I don't start a trip with out playing Willie , On the Road Again . Anyone else have a sound track?

El Paso when I hit that town Glad to know I'm not the only one who fires up Marty when I approach "The Pass." The kids always pressure me to start it and I tell them not yet a few times before relenting and popping in the tape, CD or clicking the iPod (depending on the year).

David it just seemed like the right thing to do. Much easier now with the ipod to cue up the right songs. Glad to know some one else honors old Marty and the town of El Paso. Somewhere in the record box is the orginal 45 I bought when I was a teenager . Still love that song . When I drive to the Drum Barracks on Wednesdays to work I hit the Bobby Horton selections on the iPod . Does seem funny to listen to I'm a good old rebel on a drive to a military post built here in Southern California to keep southern sympathizers under control.

Conyankee how could I forget the Moody Blues Days of Future Past ? Another part of the Sound track of my life. One of those I haven't yet replaced on cd too. hmmm Doc. I agree about Janis and Hendrix. They were very talented. Always thought Morrison was over rated although didn't stop me at the time from buying Doors albums. Once again part of the sound track of my life . . . college years.
