Dixie Girl and Reb - I was ten when I started reenacting. That was 25 years ago. For several years, I was colonel of a battalion. Now, I’m a staff officer. I’ve also written eight books and had published article in most major magazines. I’ve met some very racist reenactors over the years. I’ve met even more racist civilians for the lack of a better word. This past fall, we were putting on a living history for a local museum, and we had a women from New York bless us out for 30 minutes about us being racist - and I was wearing the blue suit. I have been called a racist, a nazi, and a few other things that I care not to repeat. Once, I was marching in a parade in the blue suit and someone yelled out baby killed. We were in the South, and my company had only dawned the blue for the parade. Ole is right - you must learn to shrug if off and not let it get to you. Something along the same lines as equally disturbing is the apathy that most people regard their history with. At least if they are blurting out derogatory remarks concerning my parents there is some level of thinking going on. It seems that most people could care less.

It's well to remember where your people came from, Reb, but it is better to think about who you are. Now. There are conflicts, and there are conflicts. You will run into stupid people as you tread the lines toward your goals. You can't avoid that. The main concern is to not be quite so stupid yourself. Only you can control that. Sounds like Dixie Girl might appreciate the offer of a wedge of lemon merengue pie. (Wink, wink) ole

I’ve met some very racist reenactors over the years. I’ve met even more racist civilians for the lack of a better word. That is so unfortunate, Michael. I can understand racist civilians, but I'd expect much better awareness among the reenactors. ole

Johann, I remember at Clairmont, 2006, your wife offering some of our boys her tastey offerings. As I recall, one of our boys offered her some Confed. money.....Can't say I remember whether she took it or not, but I sure thought the soldier should have at least given her real money for her troubles! Court poured his heart and soul into that event and not only got burned some financially but I think seriously insulted by some. He's done w/ re-enacting altogether now and like me has settled pretty much purely on Living History. Hell of a good man who puts his money where his mouth is w/ a clear courage of his convictions. I applaud you boys from Scott's battery in particular as IMO you were among the most authentic looking and acting unit there. Ironically I've had conversations w/ the judges on the authenticity award given every year. You boys won it, not anyone else, the years the CS won it. Ironically my Minnesota boys took it home for the Union boys when they won. I can be justifiably proud of the boys in my mess for their presentation and will continue to use Scott's Battery as the bar which all other CS arty units must be measured against. Young Reb Til Death, listen to what this man says about re-enacting a soldier of the CS Army. He's been taught by some of the best IMO. If you do nothing more on this site than look up the words of Albert or Steve Cone you'll have learned something useful.

Johan , I have met Steve Cone. He was part of the Franklin muster last year. The man is a walking encyclopedia of the battles in Tennessee. He added so much to what was already an outstanding presentation from Tom Cartwright of the Carter House and Eric Jacobson author of For Cause & For Country. Steve spoke from personal records of his family and his study of Central Tennessee. A always enjoy Albert, Steve and your postings on reenacting and other post on the soldier. I know you know what you are talking about. Reading all of your postings makes me wish I could get to a reenactment to see the three of you in action. Sadly it is too far to go from California. So I rely on the pictures all of you post at times. Keep them coming. Susan

Bama, I have a very narrow view of the Lost Cause; there are many who don't agree w/ me and whom I do not agree w/ who are not Lost Causers. I am intolerant of a few things: racism, distortion of history, creative editing to change the meaning of an original quote and the often seen opinion that Southern means Confederate. To claim so is nothing shy of ignorant. I'm active on twelve different boards dealing w/ the ACW; I've been a mod on three different ones over the last five years. Ole and some others probably know me from some of those other boards. The Lost Cause as I see it is quite active on several. The same rhetoric is used, the same cut and pasted talking points. I admit it has jaded me tothe point where I resigned as a mod from all but one. I suppose I should be proud of the hate mail (both snail & E)I've received over the years. Proof that truth hurts some more than others. As just one example Steve Cone is one of the finest men I have ever had the privledge to meet. He is proud of his ancestors that served the CS, and rightly so. If any man were to call the man a racist I would call them a bald faced liar. I've seen other men with similar attitudes about history and preservation. They aren't interested in distorting history but in preserving it. That is not the Lost Cause but history. There is a difference; I hope you see it. In my eyes the Lost Cause is no better than the Holocaust deniers and deserve the about same consideration. I'm blunt; always have been, I call it as I see it and let the devil take the hindmost. Like anything it's just my opinion; no one has to read my opinion or pay it any mind. When I think I'm right I stick by my guns; but when shown I'm wrong I'm willing to eat crow. Ask Ole; I've eaten plenty of crow over the years... little of it caused by the Lost Cause. And no I don't believe you are card carrying member of the Lost Cause; I believe you've proven you can read.

Could it be that you regard anyone who does not agree with your view of history to be a lost causer?...... IMHO you are pretty intorerant of this... Yes and no, Ed. I'm growing more and more crotchety every day, but I do tolerate very well (well, maybe not so well, nobody likes to admit where he's wrong) anyone who can make a case and show me some proof. The old "he said this -- no he didn't" is easy enough to fix. "There was 30 years of..... -- no there wasn't" becomes exponentially more difficult. A lot of the difference is in the family stories. Mine had none. Does that put me ahead? You've been around a while. Do you recall anyone admitting that the history classes imposed on him or her had more than a chapter on the USCW? Mostly, we're whacked with those, like myself, who became fascinated with the subject later in life. (My own began about 40 years ago with some off-and-on offerings of BOMC. But it has lately become quite intense, and I find myself reading books that years ago I would have used as doorstops. If we are not, in fact, looking for real history, what are we doing? Jawing and having a good time. Either works, but I am always compelled to question. When I stop doing that, donations will be accepted at....... ole

I'd rather encourage them to learn. If they take off in another learning direction than I have, I'll be disappointed, but I will be most happy that they are at least learning, and thinking.
