I love genealogy and have been doing this for near 4 years now. I have accounts on Ancestry Genealogy.com rootsweb and more. I will charge nothing at all I love doing this so. I can't put money on it.

I would like to know anything you may have on military units of the Clay/Cherokee counties of western North Carolina.. Some of my ancestors served, in the 39th NC regiment, Others in the Ledford side of my family in Clay county NC inlisted and then deserted some time later... i have found all I can find.. They were David Ledford, his brother Center Ledford.. Dave was killed for either deserting or being of union persuration, and no longer wanting to serve in Confederate forces after being forced into the Confederate army system at that time in western NC.. A lot of the people in this areas were torn in their alligenace to which side to conform to... I have found info on his brother Center Ledford who inslisted at the same time.. and deserted the same as David did.. Center was thought to have reenlisted again but David did not... David was killed for this, but Center Ledford survived the war and raised his family here in Clay county, NC

Chuck Stiles- You asked about military units formed in Clay /Cherokee Counties in NC. Here are some resources that might be of interest: North Carolina Civil War Regiments and Battles- This discusses Western NC units. It includes some that were recruited in part by the counties mentioned above. (Clay coming from Cherokee in 1861). (See 2nd NC Cav, 6th NC Cav, 25th NC Inf, 29th NC Inf, 62nd NC Inf, etc.). NCGenWeb Project - Cherokee County- a history of the 39th NC, probably listing your relatives. Clay Co., NC USGenWeb Genealogy- These folks should be able to tell you what went on in Clay county. It includes Census/ Marriage Records and other good stuff. You didn't ask for info on the Ledfords, but I will send some in the next posting just in case there is something that you haven't seen. An excellent source of information about those who served is the Civil War Soldiers and sailors System (CWSS): Civil War Soldiers and Sailor System Checking out your guys, I find two listings for Center Ledford, certainly the same guy. 1) PVT, Co. B, 6th NC Cavalry (AKA 65th State troops): The 6th North Carolina Cavalry - (The 65th North Carolina State Troops) 2) PVT, Co. E, Walker's Battalion, Thomas Legion Thomas' Legion: The 69th North Carolina Regiment In the case of David Ledford, there are four listings (the last being for David A. Ledford). 1) PVT, Co.B, 6th NC Cavalry (AKA 65th State troops) 2) PVT, CO.E, Walkers Battalion, Thomas Legion These are the same companies that Center Ledford served in. 3) PVT, Co. B, 7th Battalion, NC Cavalry (Consolidated into 6th NC Cav in 1863). 4) PVT, Co. E, 39th NC Infantry These sites might provide more info on your guys. RootsWeb: LEDFORD-L Re: Ledford brothers in Cherokee or Clay Co., NC This poster says that David was killed in TN by: "renegade Confederate soldiers." He also has info on Center Ledford. Re: Looking for Joseph Ledford : Wife Alsey Ball / N.C. Family history. Your guys in Section 20. Here is where your David Ledford lies today: (Sources conflict over whether David was killed in 1863 or 1864). David Ledford, Jr (1833 - ) - Find A Grave Memorial There are 16 Ledfords buried in that cemetery, including David's wife. Many of the others are certainly related. Reb, I am looking for Albert Sailhorst. He enlisted in Bankhead's Battery in Memphis, TN in 1861. I don't know where he was from or of his family status. He could have been from any TN, MS or AK counties surrounding Memphis....I really have no info on him. The War records that I have show him as dying twice: once in Selmer, Alabama in 1862 (I think '62) and again in Chattanooga, TN in '63. Thanks!

Hello! I am new and hoping to get some help. I recently joined the UDC here in Williamsburg, Virginia. My Great Great Grandfather James E. Lightfoot, from Burke County, Georgia, served in the CSA. He first enlisted on 10/12/1861 as a Private in Co. E 2nd Regiment, 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops, but was discharged on 06/25/1862 and re-enlisted as a Private in Co. C 32nd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He took the oath on 4/26/1865 in Greensboro, North Carolina. But other than his CSA service record and his certificate of marriage to Beda Ann Love on 4/24/1856, other than that there is no record of him or her. Any suggestions where I can find when and where he was born and died, all I have is approximate birth years of 1829 for him and 1836 for her. I have access to Ancestry.com but can find nothing on them. I contacted the State of Georgia but they told me Burke County Georgia records were burned 3 times and they have no record for either. I will greatly appreciate any help!

Cousin!, Kind of--shirt tail, I think. Go to the Worden genealogy family forum and find Bill Love. He is my cousin through my Worden line in IL. But I know he's done some work on his Lightfoot relatives who must be you, who are the Lightfoots from VA originally. CKL

Dear Reb, I have another one for you, which I was reminded of last week. In a 1992 article I referenced an all girl Confed. cav group from Rhea Co. TN who collected supplies, acted as couriers, etc. The source was a TN historical society magazine, an old one. Can you find out anything else on this Rhea Co. group of girls who were all teenagers, I think. CKL

Reb Last year a friend asked me if I could find anything about the service of one his relatives. I have a picture of his gravestone which reads: Christian Schuhmann Pvt. Long Prairie German Co. Texas Inf. Regt. 1818 Nov. 9, 1896 Thanks for the help. Ashbel P.S. - I just noticed he must have been in his late 40's when he served. Wow!

ashbel- As you apparently know, Christian Schuhmann and his wife Christiane Frederika Wilhemine Voigtel are in Waldeck Cemetery in Fayette County, Texas. Christian's date of death is given as 1898. The area around Waldeck , Texas (named for the landowner Count Ludwig Joseph Von Boos-Waldeck), was about 13 miles north of LaGrange, Texas in Fayette County. (Half way between Houston and san Antonio). The area around Waldeck was originally referred to as: "Long Prairie." A post office known as Long Prairie was established in 1860 and in June of 1861 the Long Prairie German Company was organized as a reserve company for the Confederacy. However, in 1861, it was under state control and was part of the Frontier Defense. It was commanded by a local resident, a German immigrant named Gerhard Albers. http://www.texasranger.org/ReCenter/Captains.pdf Apparently, there was no fighting of note against anyone in Fayette County, at least during the war. So far all of my "Lightfoot" relatives are from Georgia. I know they came over from England and I need to find all the info on James E. Lightfoot so I can go back and see if "my" relatives settled in Jamestown, Va. in 1607. There was a Lightfoot that came on one of the 3 Ships in 1607.

Dear Reb Lady, See David Hackett Fischer's book: Albion's Seed. He sources the VA migration. It's a little more likely your Lightfoots were recruited by Gov. Wm. Berkeley who took over ca. 1642. The English Civil War was in progress and Berkeley specifically recruited members of the British aristocracy and gentry to emigrate to VA, for it was not doing well as a colony. I believe the Lightfoots are specifically mentioned. Most of these families came from SW England. CKL

Rebel lady, Someone of yours was likely in or near the Jamestwon settlement, as the town of Lightfoot is on the northwestern edge of Williamsburg. I can't recall the origin of the name, though.

Don, Yes the town of Lightfoot was named for William Lightfoot. I am trying to connect my Lightfoot relatives in Georgia with the Lightfoots that settled in Jamestown and Lightfoot. I am at a stand still because I cannot find the date of birth or death for James E. Lightfoot. I need to find that and who his father was to try to connect. I live about 6 miles from Lightfoot!
