Okay, So far there is no production of The Last Full Measure movie because of the poor box office results of Gods and Genrals. We have got to find a way to get this movie made it will be expanceive but I know there is same way we can get it done. Reb till death

How? I have Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. I love both of the movies and i also have the books there based on. we need this movie to finish the trilogy.

Sorry, don't think it will happen. Maxwell was in trouble with some Maryland communities for taking an advance on the movie to ensure it would be filmed in their communities. Maxwell was supposed to take the money and come up with a script by a certain date, he did not. The communities sued him to get their money back. Since then, Ted Turner, who owns the movie rights to the book, has said Ron Maxwell will not be allowed to direct it. I think due to the disaster that was G&Gs it is DOA.

I had heard that Ron Maxwell & Ted Turner did have a disagreement but I wasn't knowledgeable of the content.

It's a pity the movie won't be made. It's also a shame because a lot of the criticism of God's and Generals was simply not valid. I read some of the reviews at the time the movie was first released and a few of the remarks were that; (1) the movie protrayed Jackson as a religious fanatic (which he was, in a sense) (2) the movie portrayed all the generals as praying too much (many of them did, indeed, pray a lot) (3) the characters really didn't talk like that in real life (they sure did) (4) the part about Jackson's affection for the young girl (forgot her name) was phoney as Jackson wouldn't act that way (the story is true according to the author, who was asked about it). The people who didn't like God's and Generals should do a little more research before writing a review. I thought the movie was a little long but very factual and I'm sorry there won't be another.

The only beef I had with Gods and generals was that the movie focused largely on the Confederate perspective, while the Union portrayal was minimal. At least Gettysburg was more well-balanced. As for The Last Full Measure, unless it was better balanced and Jeff Daniels played Chamberlain, I would have no desire to see it.

If GAG was so factual dont you think the opening scene with Bob Lee could've shown him without the beard he didnt grow until later in the war? Ron Maxwell spent 90 million of Ted Turners cash to make GAG and it returned only 12 at the box office. Do the math. No one in Hollywood will be bankrolling another self indulgent attempt by Ron to finish the trilogy. GAG is a mess on many levels. As a movie its way too long (and I understand theres whole segments on Antietam and John Wilkes Booth that were cut from the 4 hours we sat thru.) Maxwells problem was that he let the scope of the project run away. It starts out about Jackson and should've stayed there as a decent film about Stonewall would be welcome. But then Ron decides to leave out the Valley Campaign which is Jackson at his best and instead we get an hour of the battle of Frederickburg...a battle that Jackson has little to do with. Then we get Chancellorsville which is presented with Jackson and staff riding into a Civil War reenactment encampment ala the Magnificent 7. Please! I dont care if the story about the young girl is true. It was so badly overacted by that kid that I wanted to run screaming from the theater (which by then many people had left or were asleep) Ultimately the whole experience of GAG was just staggering to me. Maxwell had an opportunity to follow up on the success of Gettysburg but he blew it big time and in the end cost himself the chance to finish the trilogy. As a right wing conservative, he of course claims there was a liberal conspiracy to crush GAG. I dont think he understands that his version of the Lost Cause on film wasnt going to sell well outside of certain regions. Too bad he destroyed his own franchise and, I guess, his friendship with Ted Turner. Kent Dorr - Ohio

I wonder what the logistics would be to create THE LAST FULL MEASURE as a DVD and/or cable TV release only. Would it be necessary to concentrate on the 20th Maine and Col. Chamberlain? Wouldn't there be new heroes to star? I only ask because the logistics in film-making I have never understood.

I agree that while parts of Gods and Generals was good, on the whole it was a movie that was terribly uneven. It ran far too long, and there was no cohesion to the various storylines. With some judicious editing, it would have made a damn good movie about Jackson (who, I admit, I never cared for but found that the movie helped make him a real person for me). Last night I finally found my DVD of GaG. Slipped it into the player and don't remember watching any of it. To set the stage, my monitor is directly in front of me. My TV sits at my right elbow. The reason I had GaG on was because there was nothing on the TV -- no news, repeats on BookTV, old stuff on SciFi and little of value on tru or IFC. I played both sides -- the whole nine yards -- and remember nothing about it. Except the music. The Last Full Measure is going to have to find a backer and Ted is not likely to volunteer. If WE want it made, we'll need to persuade one of our billionaire friends to take a shot. Guess I should shoot a quick email to my buddy, the Donald, with the request. Maybe I can get my buddy, Clint, to look into it. The reality is that one does not dump millions into a movie that appeals only to thousands. Ken Burns got away with it. He might well have been the last to do so. ole

Gettysburg focuses to much on the Federal side. Another reason i like G&G is cause if is about my favorite general.

While both Gettysburg and GaG had their slow moments, I still enjoy watching them both and will gladly pay the admission price and the cost of the DVD if only someone would make "Last Full Measure"...This needs to be done!!! I feel unfulfilled...

It definitely lacked pacing. It would have been a much better film if about half of it had been left on the cutting room floor. Like I said, there was no focus to the story, or stories. Stick with one or the other.

As far as I'm concerned, the only reason to watch G & G and gain anything from it is to make a study of Stonewall and forget about the rest of the movie. I thought Stephen Lang was supurb in his portrayal of Jackson. Jackson's biographer, James I. Robertson, served as an advisor for the film on the General and I have to believe that if the portrayal was anything but accurate, he would have had nothing to do with it. I'm glad I read his book before seeing the movie. I was waiting for Jackson's litter bearers to drop him on his head after his wounding - not once, but twice. Lo and behold... But the movie was based on Sharra's novel - not Jackson's biography, and there lies one of the problems. As one poster already stated, we missed out on a lot of Jackson's accomplishments prior to Chancellorsville. The movie was poorly edited and tried to cover too much ground, even for a long film. Heck, as a movie-goer, I would have rather seen "Gettysburg" in three parts rather than one long one. Same here. One of the problems that will continue to linger in film-making is the extensive use of reenactors. In the movie biz there are two types of extras: union actors that belong to the SAG, or some other union and then there are non-union actors that are dreaming of one day becoming a union actor. Now, I love civil war reenactors. They are the best at what they do, especially if you are to make a film. There is no other choice for the part, according to me, but I'm just a movie-goer. A number of people I know who are not as interested in the civil war era as I am were turned off by G & G for both it's length and the extended amount of time the players spent praying and gazing upwards. That's Jackson. Couple that with Maxwell, a genial conservative director and you've got a mix that dosen't fit too well in today's Hollywood. It's no wonder that this film was beat up by the critics before it was even released. I think Maxwell is finished, but that's just an opinion. I think he's an ok guy. My favorite movie is still "Ride With the Devil." Regards to all, Connyankee

Stephen Lang's portrayal was great, and for me, was the highlight of the film. Regarding the movie's length, I wonder if it wouldn't have been better if it had been made as a TV mini-series.

G&G is a truly awful film with few redeeming features. The battle scenes are not bad , Steven Lang does a good job and Jeff Daniels is as reliable as ever but none can make up for the turgid pace of the film and whoever cast Robert Duvall (and I'm a fan) as Lee has a lot to answer for. Gettysburg was slow but was miles better. I loved Martin Sheen as Lee and the much younger Daniels as Chamberlain. I thought Sheen portrayed Lee as war weary, saddled with the lonliness of command, to perfection. I am a great fan of The West Wing and I often think that Sheen took the character of Lee and made him Jed Bartlett and is really playing President Robert E Lee. Last Full Measure would probably make a good tv mini-series but after the financial disaster of the other films I can't see where the production money would come from.

Gag a maggot, if Last Full Measure would be anywhere close to G&G. For those who enjoyed G&G I bet you liked Ishtar. Just try reading Red Badge of Courage or other good novel. As those of you who have seen my posts, I'm passionate about history and the civil war but don't think ever bit of print material concerning it should be made into film. Just ranting. Manhunt, American Brutus would be better, to me is the movie which needs to be made. Hopefully, it will resume production Doc C

I would love to see American Brutus made into a GOOD movie. Manhunt I disliked intensley as a book so know I would dislike the movie. The book read like a movie script. I don't like nonfiction that tells me what a character is thinking . Susan
