Since everyone is waiting for the "next" Civil War film to be made...I'd like to suggest that it might be "Stealing the General" from Russell Bonds recent history of the Andrews Raid. I had some email late last year with Mr Bonds and he told me that an option had been taken out on his work. For those of you who dont know how the process works in making a film, if someone wishes to begin a film project from an existing story or book, you option the work meaning you pay the publisher and author a price for an amount to time to get a screenplay written. Sometimes that can involve the author himself but not always. Once a screenplay, or at minimum a treatment (expanded outline), is done, then its time to interest the actors, directors and investors to move forward. Keep your ears open. Kent Dorr - Ohio

In my eyes GAG did not hold a candle to Gettysburg other than the fact Stephen Lang is one of the best actors out there and I think if it were not for him the movie would have been a total disaster. I agree with whoever said the Little Girl was overplayed...It was so bad I wanted to puck. It look like a kid that Mommy was encouraging to blow out that overly punctuated Southern Accent...Duvall as Lee was about as boring as they come..All the returning characters gained 25 pounds and of course were older which makes no sense if you watch the movies in order..We do the trilogy to be completed but not at the cost of a poor movie. I am sure Turner is done with Maxwell but that does not mean there is not someone else out there who could step up and do a really nice job at the Third installment. I also agree with there are so very few of us who will spend the money to see Civil War Movies or buy Civil War Books or DVD that it does not make it worth there while to go ahead with these type projects unless you find someone who is an avid Civil War Buff with the money to back it no matter what the return and do it for future generations to learn from..I say we petition Bill Gates...Hes got the dough...and can afford to lose money anyway..I would love to see a Civil War Mini Series made for TV...With something like that I think you could bring a large viewing to a network..People are sick of seeing Reality Shows and are ready for another North and South...What a great cast that could be put together for this. And you could make something like that run for a whole season.. Huma

I keep on meaning to read 'American Brutus'. I do want to know what Booth got up to in the years between John Brown's execution and 'Our American Cousin'. I enjoyed 'Manhunt', but only after I decided that I should see it as a fact-based novel rather than a straight historical work. Not seen 'Gods and Generals', but 'Gettysburg' has improved on repeated viewings. Once I got over the shock of those beards I appreciated it a lot more: I could feel the tension in the woods before Pickett's Charge.

I know what you mean about the beards. I thought they had taken the big industrial push broom to make Jeb Stuart's beard and it was on crooked. Go get American Brutus right away. It is a wonderful book. I am not a fan of Manhunt at all . It is a novel based on fact for sure. Susan

My golden retriever is a better director than Ron Maxwell. At least my dog understands how to keep things moving along. Calling Maxwell a hack is an insult to all of the marginally competent people in the world. If Maxwell remains at the helm, there is no chance of it being made, and I personally think it's better not to have the movie at all than to have a horrendously bad piece of crap like G&G was under his wretched direction. By the way, I was unable to finish reading Last Full Measure. Michael Shaara is the fiction writing version of Maxwell. Eric

Eric, Please quit being so wishy-washy and tell us how you really feel. Really, I agree with you. I could barely choke down the book and for the first time in my life, walked out of a movie. I think the steps forward taken in promoting interest in the CW by the Ken Burns series and the movie "Gettysburg" was lost by G&G. It was awful.

I am with you Eric better not to have been done as to have been poorly attempted. Althought I enjoyed Gettysburg G&G was not what I had expeted. I would anticipate a better chance of a TV summer series. More along the lines of following Perhaps R.E. Lee from "Gone for Soldies" through Last Full Measure" A character study on why Lee was the man he was. Although I doubt that would fly as he may not be considered politically correct. Perhaps just following the fortunes of major players both north and south prior to and through the war. Also your point as to who will finance the production. It is my understanding that period peices do not generally do well at the box office. So to be realistic the odds for a triquell is not good.

Eric, thank you so much for taking time to reply. 1. I don't have an answer now on how to pay for it, but perhaps with folks willing to pre-subscribe we could convince Ted Turner to produce LFM, after all this trilogy will be his greatest legacy. 2. G&G was not good, but Gettysburg was outstanding. We could all learn from the success of Gettysburg as well as the mistakes of G&G. I hope everyone will not just give up. Thanks again I know you are sincere in your opinions and I doubt we really disagree on much. Johnny

Perhaps HBO would pick it up. John Adams was really great !! I signed up for HBO just so I could watch it and was not disapointed.

If another CW movie is going to be made, it will probably not be LFM. I appreciate Jeff Sharra's efforts in preservation, but I don't think he is as good a writer as his father. Neither of the books he wrote for the trilogy were nearly as interesting as The Killer Angels. Just my opinion. There will have to be a story that is as compelling as the story of "Glory". It appealed to CW buffs and movie goers. Let's face it - even the History Channel doesn't show much history anymore. It doesn't seem to be a popular subject with most people. If somebody is going the lay out big money, they will want their movie to appeal to as many people as possible. LFM does not qualify.

Tim , I agree with you on both counts. The next Civil War movie will undoubtedly be based on excellent Russ Bonds' Stealing the General. It's a great, compelling story, and I can only hope that someone hurries to make it. Eric

Eric when we read Stealing the General in Shotgun's book discussion group Russell Bond joined us. At that time he said the book had been optioned for a movie. I hope if it is done, it will be done right. It was such an exciting book. I was rooting for both sides . Even though I knew how it ended I was hanging on every turn of the chase like I didn't know. That is a good book . Much rather see this made into a quality movie, than the LFM . Another book I would love to see made into a movie is American Brutus. Not sure it would sell though. Susan
