Eric I had heard about making Manhunt into a movie. It read like a movie script when I read it. I really did not like the book and don't think I would have gone to see it as a movie. I don't like books that are supose to be non fiction telling me what characters are thinking. How do we know that ? Susan

I would love to see last full measure on the big screen. I have whole passages of "Gettysburg" dialog memorized from seeing it countless times. Also at the risk of being lambasted heartily I really enjoyed G&G. I don't mind how long a movie runs if it takes it's time and develops the characters or tells an expansive story. But honestly I can understand how it would turn a lot of people off. It should have been a mini-series of about 10 hours ala John Adams. Also I was disappointed that it deviated from the book by nearly eliminating characters(Hancock) and adding others(Jim)that absolutely did nothing to advance the story. I am a huge fan of Mr. Shaara's work and was truly surprised at how far G&G strayed from his excellent book. Hey maybe Tom Hanks could pitch it to his buddies at HBO! Judging from their track record with historically themed series like Band of Brothers, Rome, From the Earth to the Moon, and John Adams I bet they would do a bang up job. Gettysburg the movie was originally planned as a multipart tv movie I know it got edited for the big screen (though it is like impossible to find any of the extended version deluxe editions of the Movie...available on vhs only). Gods and Generals damn near bankrupted Ted Turner's Production company and studio if I remember correctly......The movie itself wasnt bad except I think it packed waaay too much in and as mentioned above would have worked infinitely better as a 10 hr miniseries (maybe more than a mention of Antietam and 2nd Manassas). It probably would have worked out better finiacially too (though I dont know the first thing about that industry). The Last full measure would basically be the same type of deal I think.. Though the book lends itself to some epic battle scenes made for the big screen, overall to do the book justice iin terms of depth and substance I think another miniseries (as someone said earlier ala HBO and Tom Hanks) would be necessary. ken

a man by the name of String Along Jim. if anyone is a fan of the Baltimore Mariners you might recognize them from a halftime show or if anyone has ever visited the Piratez Tavern in Silver Springs, Maryland you might recognize them from there. i only know Jim though i dont know any of his pirate mates. go to piratesforsail.com and you can see pictures and get a schedule for their next performance, you can book em for any occasion also if you wanted some entertainment. if you go to youtube and type in pirates for sail LLC in the search bar you can see some of their performances and they also havea cd out and if you click on the cover on the bottom of their site you can read all about it and even hear some of the songs. they are really good and i recommend hem to anyone who is lookin for some good music.

I have a cousin that is famous in Mexico. I have a few very distant cousins that are famous in Hollywood, but I dont really talk to them so. I say we all write to Tom Hanks asking him to do the movie for us.

what would we say???? something like: Dear Mr.Hanks, I am a member of the Civil War Interactive Discussion Board and we have recently been discussing the movies Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. Hollywood hasn't made the third installment called the Last Full Measure and they wont unless an actor is in it that they know people like. Well we think you are the best and we would love for you to consider pitching it to a director friend of yours and maybe staring in it also. It would mean a lot to us Civil War History buffs. Ps. I love Saving Private Ryan!!!!

I think the idea of trying to get someone to make this book into a movie is beating a dead horse. It isn't going to happen . Susan

I hate to replay a previous post but here it goes -Gag a maggot, if Last Full Measure would be anywhere close to G&G. For those who enjoyed G&G I bet you liked Ishtar. Just try reading Red Badge of Courage or other good novel. As those of you who have seen my posts, I'm passionate about history and the civil war but don't think ever bit of print material concerning it should be made into film. Please Dr. J, end this tiresome thread. In the meantime, I'll retire to my sideline habitat. Doc C

Ishtar was one of the most horrendous wastes of film ever perpetuated on the American public. Having said that, even it was probably beter then G&G - sort of like comparing month old garbage with 2 month old garbage - they both stink to high heaven.

I agree Istar was better and that is not saying much at all . Actually that is saying nothing at all. I have never been able to get though G&G , I tend to fall asleep after the credits. At least when I watched Istar I didn't fall asleep. I agree not every novel about the Civil War should be made into a movie. I have seen some bad Civil War movies and G &G rates right up there at the top. Never been a fan of the books either. I like to read histories not novels. I read novels about other things. Oh and Istar had Warren Beatty in it and he was nice to look at . No fake bead that didn't fit right.

again I must say I don't understand all the G&G hatin' going on. I've seen literally thousands of movies and I can think of many that disappointed/bored/irritated me more than G&G. For instance anything with Will Smith rates far below the worst civil war movie imo. At least an effort was made, albeit an imperfect effort. I mean seriously there are so many cheesey so-called historical movies out there that did huge numbers at the box office....Braveheart being the one that irks me the most. I would rather watch a month long G&G marathon instead of 90% of the crud Hollywood cranks out these days. In my opinion G&G isn't the best ACW movie ever made but it's far from the worst...and the beards were way better than Gettysburg LOL!

Would Tom Hanks even do a Civil War film. He seems to be more into World War 2 films. If you want to do a Civil War film why not ask HBO since they do more history shows than even the History Channel. Come to think of it I think the Food Network does more history shows than the History Channel.
