Noticed there was a whole slew of war movies on TV tonight, from numerous decades, many of which I'd heard of but never seen. Got me wondering, which are truly worth watching? What do Y'All think is the best war movie ever. And, why?

Ok ! I will agree with Susan on the longest day (historical accuracy), Saving Private ( personal level) But I feel if you really want to understand why Anericans fought and died you must watch "Band of Brothers" 'nuf said.

Best Civil War movie - "The Horse Soldiers" with John Wayne. Best War movie ever - "Saving Private Ryan." Best scene in a war movie - the landing on the beach at Normandy in "Saving Private Ryan." Saw it again last night for the fifth or sixth time and I still break out in a sweat watching it.

I have to go along with "Saving Pvt Ryan", but "Band of Brothers" is right up there too. For best Civil War movie, what about "Gettysburg" or "Gods and Generals"? While both had their "slow" moments, I thought the battle scenes were magnificent.

I just had a war movie marathon this weekend! First time I had seen "The Thin Red Line" and "We were Soldiers". I really liked both. "Saving Private Ryan" was on and that was about the umpteenth time I had seen it. I noticed the actor Barry Pepper is in lots of war movies! He was in another one I really like, "Flags of Our Fathers". I can't say I have a favorite. I really like "Life is Beautiful" and "Schindler's List" is a must see for all. Glory is one of my favorties. My brother in law said I must see "The Birth of a Nation??" I've got Netflix!!!! Too many to list!

I would say 'Saving Pvt. Clewell, er Ryan' as No. 1, followed by 'Das Boot" at 1A. Both for their unrelenting realism and the horrors of war. Best Civil War movie might be 'Glory.' But you know, 'Red Badge of Courage' is not bad. Directed by John Huston and starring a real WWII hero in Audie Murphy, it tells a pretty good tale. Shot in black and white in 1951, it's worth another look. Not bad for Hollywood. Bill Mauldin, the WWII 'Willie and Joe' cartoonist, also has a role.

Forgot this gem: 'The Train', directed by John Frankenheimer, released in 1965, won an Oscar for screenplay, black and white, stars Burt Lancaster, who did most of his own stunts. Intriguing story about the French Resistance trying to prevent the Germans from looting classic art from the country in 1944. Spectacular train wreck sequences using real trains.

Saving Private Ryan - for it's realism Enemy at the Gates - same thing; worst battle in history (Stalingrad) as far as I know. Glory - for it's storyline & character acting connyankee

You people make it difficult to settle on an absolute "best." Each has its superior moments. I give "Das Boot" and "Saving Private Ryan" as all-time most gripping; "Horse Soldiers" as the most mindless entertainment; "Glory" as the most socially provocative; "The Red Badge of Courage" as the most sensitive; "The Longest Day" as the longest but most historical. If you bend to being socially conscious, "Dances with Wolves" works. See what I mean? Sheez! ole

Red Badge of Courage/Paths of Glory. Guess you have make subcategories - war action, psychological, etc. and then make your selections because just simply best war movie is rather too large. Like all of the above mentioned films. Interesting about Horse Soldiers, it was filmed where I grew up in La and remember the buzz of Wayne & Holden being there for filming. It's always been comical to me the mentioning of the union troops being captured and sent to Andersonville. It would be months later that Winder would send his son to Ga for the selection of the prison site. Thus Andersonville didn't exist at the time of the cavalry raid. Doc C
