I had a board game as a boy that, I think, was called "The American Heritage Civil War Game". The board was a map of the USA and the playing pieces were small, plastic infantry, cavalry and artillery figures. You rolled dice to determine your moves and the idea was to line up your forces to "jump" enemy pieces, thus eliminating them from the game. The game box had a picture of the battle of Lookout Mountain on it. Anybody familiar with this one???

Yeah, I remember that one, was it Battle Cry? It wasn't as good as Broadside (War of 1812) or Dogfight (ww1) games in that American Heritage series but it was okay. The other game in the series was Hit the Beach (ww2) which I never saw or played.

Yeah, I think that was the name. I also had Dogfight (Liked to be the German player).

Actually during the Centennial there was a pretty good game from Parker Brothers called 1863 tht was much better than Battle Cry. A buddy of mine had it and we spent hours playing it. Relied more on your skill and cunning versus a dice roll like Battle Cry did. David, I vividly recall playing '1863' and 'Dogfight.' Man, the mention of these games really brought back fond memories. Did anybody here play the old Avalon Hill strategy wargames? I was introduced to 'Tactics II' by a friend around 1960. We'd spend hours moving those unit counters around a tabletop battlefield grid. A few years later, I bought 'Gettysburg' (1964) and believe it or not, it turned out to be my first real introduction to the actual battlefield. Amazing how much I learned from that game, at least topographically. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gettysburg_%28game%29 Later, I bought the more complicated 1977 version of the game. In between, I played D-Day, Afrika Corps, B-17, Battle of the Bulge, Stalingrad, Chancellorsville. I lived a sheltered life.  Recently, saw a 1964 version of Gettysburg in a flea market. Asking $250 for it. Yikes. My own game had already gone the way of my baseball cards.

Wow, I still have my old board wargames up in the attic, including the old Gettysburg which was my first true wargame. Maybe I need to pull all that stuff down and sell it, I certianly don't play them anymore now that most of them are on computers now. Unfortunately my mom gave all my baseball cards and toy soldiers away, ^%*!+ but the wargames were something she did not, becasue I was still playing them in college and beyond for a few years.

Memories, memories! I still have all my old board wargames on the shelf, the Avalon Hill ones (ie: Gettysburg, Blitzkreig, etc.) were the best! I vastly prefer board war games to computer war games. The only down side is making sure that the cat doesn't reposition units during breaks! I've been trying to get my daughter to play Gettysburg with me - she made an unkind comment regarding Marse Robert's sanity planning the 3rd day - I want to give her the opportunity to walk in his shoes, so to speak.

Along the same lines, did any of you have the toy solider playset made by Marx that came out during the Centenial years - "The Battle Of The Blue And Gray"? Checkout the prices on Ebay now, the original is astronomical, and the reissue from the 90's goes for 2 or 3 hundred bucks! Boy, I wish Mom and Dad had consulted with me when they were cleaning out the attic and basement after I moved out!

Yes, my mom has apologized profusely about all my toy soldiers when I showed her what they were worth, could have paid for any storage fees plus over the years if she needed the space. What should we be making our kids save today, Wiis, Play Stations, I doubt it.

Sadly, it seems that none of the stuff that our kids use today is meant to last. For you parents, how many mp3 players, cellphones, digital cameras, etc., have you replaced for your kids? It's sad in a way...we are lamenting the loss of our artifacts of youth, and there is a huge market for the surviving originals and the repros...somehow, I don't think 40 years from now my daughter will have fond memories of and want to once again possess her 1st mp3 player. What does that bode for them, that there may be no sentimental artifacts of their innocence?

Yeah, I had the Marx Giant Blue & Gray Battle set complete with "exploding" redoubt and "firing" mortar. And, for some reason, the South won every battle I set up. Sure with I had that set now...
