Southern Son, what a fun discovery. Were they actually in the house? Maybe somebody found (or bought) them elsewhere and stashed them for safekeeping? Did the house exist before the Civil War? It might be a good idea to have your artifacts appraised by a reputable dealer. If they really are valuable, it would be wise to have them insured. Also ask the dealer the best way to protect them from light, moisture, skin oils, etc. Handle them with plastic or cotton gloves, for starters. Southern Son, the strongbox is OK to protect the artifacts from light, but you can't be sure if they are properly protected from moisture, skin oil, etc. There is a mild acid in skin oil, as well as minute amounts of sweat, which has salt. The locket might be more vulnerable to such damage than the button and insignia. You would feel so bad if you opened it up in a few years and discovered . . . Ask a dealer for advice. Another source of info would be a museum. Think of it as preventive medicine. Regards, Patty
