Good morning :)  another new person for the masses here, whilst googling to try to find a friendly CW forum, this one popped up and I thought I'd giving it a try.

Im Shannon, 39 (almost 40) an avid genealogist and an ex reenactor (I did it in the middle-late 80's)

Right now Im in the process of planning a CSA stone dedication for my husbands 3rd great grandfather and Im trying to find some information about infirmary camps around the time of the Battle of Mine Run (I posted what I was looking for in the genealogy section)

I have been doing genealogy research since a school project when I was 13 sparked the interest for me and have been obsessed ever since.  I am a descendant of WP Inman (the man portrayed in the book/movie, written by my cousin, Cold Mountain (its my one and only "claim to fame" lol.  It was actually research on the Inmans back in 1980 that got me interested in research (WAYYYYY before my cousin even wrote the book).  I love research so much I run a genealogy forum specifically to help other people because I can't get enough of just researching my own lol

Anyway....I've rambled....said hi.....and I look forward to posting with you!!!

***since I have permission, this is the link to my genealogy forum  http://www.ancestrallychallenged.com/forum

I didnt know the rules here about forum linking, so I put it in my profile.. (didnt want to get in trouble with the powers that be!!)

The movie was good....it was just hard to watch it and seperate the fact that its 96% fiction compared to what really happened lol (that and I cant stand Nicole Kidman)

I have a write up with pictures about the true story on my genealogy board

Hi Shani.

If you don't mind my asking, was the Inman in the film a recognisable portrait of your forebear?

Hello, Shani, it's good to have another new member in this board.  We have some of the most fascinating conversations in here.  You'll find others interested in genealogy as well.

I loved the novel, especially Inman's relationship with the Cherokee.  I think your cousin did a wonderful job of writing a 19th-century version of the Odyssey.

Didn't think much of Jude Law in the film either .  He didn't seem to have a clue .

For me, that was the strength of the character and Law's performance. I saw him as just wanting to get home and continually being rather perturbed at everything that might have prevented him from doing so.

Shani - thanks for the details about your ancestor.

i dont think you understand. i like Jude Law because he's cute. ive never really paid attention to how good of a actor he is or if he plays the roles that he is in well.

Hello ShaniFaye,

I live near Cold Mountain.  The Bethel Rural Community organized a Cold Mountain Tour a few years ago in response to the interest in the book.  I have been on a couple of these tours and it is very interesting and well organized.  Each year is a bit different as some sites drop off the tour and new sites are added in.  Inman's grave is always on the tour.  I recommend it to anyone in the area at the time.  Go to this website for details:  http://www.bethelcomm.org/purpose.html.

Izzy
