I am looking to get feedback from those of you in the community who play wargames, of the hex and counter variety, rather than video games. I am beginning to research specific battles, while working on a set of rules in order to create a game based on the history of a battle, or campaign, of the Civil War. If you were given the ability to choose which battle you would most like to see, and be able to replay, which would you choose? What about a campaign? If you have several battles/ campaigns, please list them in order of preference...(no more than five please). Thanks so much! Here Comes the Rebels!

Vicksburg Campaign, Tulahoma Campaign, Battle of Atlanta. All because the results were so decisive but also so close run. Command incompetance being what won all three for the enemy.

Me & my Pards play Johnny Reb III. The thing we like about it is that we can re-create battlefield terrain or make up our own. When I re-create a battlefield (I've done Shiloh, Ft. Pillow), I just do the terrain. Then, I make 3 sets of "Order of Battle" for the Yanks and 3 for the Rebs. The palyers randomly select an "order"; this is their objective. Also, it dictates where the first division enters the table and when/where the second division enters. From there, it is up to each player to lead their Division to victory. I don't recreate original battlefeild positions or troop strengths, only because I want each player to use their command tallents/skills, not Grant or Lee's!

I would choose the battle of Stones River. A pretty much indecisive battle fought by armies as evenly matched as you'll find (approx 38,000 CSA v 43,000 US), commanders with near identical battle plans and with plenty of ebb and flow of battle. The Union took most casualties but they also took the ground.Pick your own winner.

Hey FedReb, After doing my research, I've decided to go with Stones River. You are right, it is a great and, (I think), overlooked battle. Cheers, Will

I would have to say the Battle of First Manassas,Virginia. I feel that if the C.S.A. would have ran after those damn yankee's and drove them into washington(which had no defenses at the time) the war would have been over way before it started.

If you saved the money from every trip to a battlefield and or reenactment, then you would have enough to fly to Hawaii every year.

Captain Crow I am with you . I don't tan I burn. Been to Hawaii once, have no desire to go again. I saw what I wanted to there . I live at the beach here and never "go to the beach". I too would rather be going to a battlefield every year. That or other historical sites. Susan

Has the Stone River game been produced? Once played a board game on this battle and after the 4th turn or so it became an WWI Western Front game with little movement. The battle map was to confining to allow sweeping flank attacks. If you want to make any money doing this, you must have a Gettysburg version. I personally feel that Chickamauga is the best battle to board game. Last edited on Sun Sep 6th, 2009 05:33 pm by 79thPaVol |

How about a primarily cavalry battle? Check out the Battle of Brandy Station.
