Conyankee the Quartermasters museum is small but it is interesting isn't it. They are also some of the nicest people I met. I went there to see if I can get information on my great grandfather who was in the quarter masters department but as a civilian. They went out of their way to try and find information for me . Sadly they didn't find any but I recieved a very nice email appologizing for not finding any information .

I toured the museum of course while I was there.

Susan,

I like 'em big or small. I tend to favor the little places here and there - you know, the historical societies and small museums of little towns. It seems like every town in VA and TN has one and each is unique. I especially enjoy talking to the people with the care-worn eyes who protect and preserve these treasures. The list is endless. Had the opportunity to visit tiny Averasboro, NC last year and quite glad I did.

I believe VMI has a museum of sorts {maybe it's part of their library} and there's a Robert E. Lee memorial/museum under the Lee Chapel at Washington & Lee University.

They're both in Lexington, VA, a quaint, small, college-town in the Shenandoah Valley.

Oh, and there's the Stonewall Jackson home in Lexington, too, within walking distance of W&L.

Interestingly enough, Traveller is buried near the Lee Chapel, I believe. And the skeleton-less hide of Jackson's mount, Little Sorrel, is on display (unnaturally stuffed, I think) at the VMI Museum just a stone's throw away.

Lexington's a neat little town and it's impressive to watch the cadets on parade march at VMI, very similar to The Citadel in that respect.

Isn't the raincoat he was wearing when killed also at VMI? Been many years, but I think that's where I saw it.

I like the new Tredegar Iron works mueseum in Richmond VA. As long as you dont mind all the slavery stuff in the beginning. Its right next to the Richmond battlefield Visitor Center.

The Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison is IMO one of the best. Not too overwhelming and full of fascinating info.

Chickamauga NPS site is IMO the best NPS museum, but I also haven't been back there in a LONG time... early 1990's.

I recommend the Civil War Naval Musuem in Columbus, Georgia.
