One final response, if I may and then I am done. In rereading my posts, I believe I put on a very large set of blinders and refused to look at what others were saying. Booth had no ties to the Confederate armed forces or the government and that is what I was trying to say. He was acting as an individual, not as a part of a Confederate conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln, was a sympathiser rather than an active participant in the struggle, and yes, was a confederate in that he bought into the cause. My apologies to all.
I will reiterate however that there is no evidence that anyone in an official capacity had anything to do with the assassination.
